RBC Canadian Open: Robert MacIntyre Secures 1st PGA Tour Title

HAMILTON, OntarioRobert MacIntyre, with his father Dougie serving as his caddie, clinched his first PGA Tour title at the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday. Amid the buzz of a nearby television drone, MacIntyre maintained his composure to secure the victory.

Starting the final round at Hamilton Golf and Country Club with a four-stroke lead, MacIntyre shot a 2-under 68, narrowly beating playing partner Ben Griffin by a single stroke. The 27-year-old Scottish left-hander sealed the win by two-putting for par from 12 feet on the par-4 18th hole, finishing with a score of 16-under 264.

“Goose bumps. It’s incredible,” MacIntyre expressed. “It’s been a lifelong dream to win on the PGA Tour. Achieving this with my dad by my side is unbelievable.”

This victory marks MacIntyre’s first PGA Tour win in his 45th start. A former McNeese State player, he was also a member of Europe’s triumphant 2023 Ryder Cup team and holds two European Tour titles: the 2020 Aphrodite Hills Cyprus Showdown and the 2022 Italian Open.

Reflecting on the competition, MacIntyre said, “It was a dogfight. Ben played exceptionally well, making it tough down the stretch. Having my dad on the bag and my girlfriend here makes this win even more special. I’m sure there’s a celebration happening back home in Oban.”

MacIntyre also shared his irritation with a noisy television drone that hovered close during the game. “If it didn’t leave, I was ready to throw my clubs at it. It felt like a giant wasp,” he remarked.

After rotating through several caddies in the past year, MacIntyre called upon his father on an emergency basis for this tournament. “I called him to caddie, expecting just to play the tournament. Winning it with him is surreal,” he said.

The emotional victory highlighted the deep bond between MacIntyre and his family. “Everything I’ve achieved is thanks to my family’s support,” he shared. “My dad taught me golf. We’d play four holes every night, regardless of the weather.”

Dougie MacIntyre, visibly moved during a CBS Sports interview, said, “I’m a grass cutter… this is unbelievable.”

Ben Griffin finished with a 65, parring the 18th after birdieing the previous three holes. “I fought hard. It felt like the cup had a lid on it for most of the day,” Griffin commented. Victor Perez of France secured third place at 14-under after shooting his second consecutive 64.

Two-time Canadian Open champion Rory McIlroy also shot 64, tying for fourth place with Tom Kim at 13-under. McIlroy, who won in 2019 and 2022, reflected on his performance, saying, “Three really good rounds of golf, one not so good. I corrected it after a good range session.”

Canadian Corey Conners was the top finisher from his country, shooting a 65 to end at 12-under. “It’s something to be proud of,” Conners said. “Though I didn’t win, it’s a cool honor.”

Fellow Canadian Mackenzie Hughes, who was tied for second entering the final day, ended another stroke back after a 70. “Pretty gutted,” Hughes admitted. “I wanted this one badly… it will sting for a while.”

Last year, Nick Taylor became the first Canadian to win the event since 1954, making a 72-foot eagle putt on the fourth hole of a playoff against Tommy Fleetwood at Oakdale in Toronto.
