Will Levis’ Rookie Season Offers Hope Despite Criticism from PFF

May 25, Will Levis’ Rookie Season Offers Hope Despite Criticism from PFF

Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis had a noteworthy rookie season that, despite its challenges, left fans optimistic about his potential as a franchise player.

New head coach Brian Callahan and the Titans organization also viewed Levis’ rookie performance positively. Callahan acknowledged that the team’s confidence in Levis influenced their significant offseason investments to strengthen the roster around him.

However, not everyone shares this optimism. Pro Football Focus’ Trevor Sikkema ranked Levis at No. 28 among starting quarterbacks, offering a rather critical assessment. Sikkema noted:

“Levis didn’t get his first NFL start until Week 8 in 2023, but from then on he was an entertaining gunslinger. He finished the season with 16 big-time throws and 14 turnover-worthy plays with only two games where he earned a passing grade above 70.0. His mission in 2024 is simple: make more good throws than bad ones. He has the arm talent to be a good starter in this league. He just needs to know when to rip it and, perhaps more importantly, when not to.”

While it’s important to recognize the areas where Levis needs improvement, ranking him so low seems unjust. My philosophy is straightforward: rookie quarterbacks shouldn’t be ranked above those who have already played in the NFL. Although Levis’ sample size is small, it’s more than what we have for rookies like Jayden Daniels and Caleb Williams, who Sikkema placed higher.

There are cases where a rookie surpasses a struggling veteran, but Levis doesn’t fall into that category. Despite a tough start, he showed enough promise to be considered a viable starter. Comparing him to Bryce Young, who had a similarly rough rookie year due to a weak supporting cast, Levis arguably had more positives.

Levis could potentially rank higher than quarterbacks like Drake Maye and Jacoby Brissett. Although Brissett has proven to be a capable backup, his status as a starter in 2024 is uncertain, whereas Levis is confirmed to start.

No one is declaring Levis the next superstar, but he has shown enough potential to warrant a higher ranking than some untested rookies. He still has much to prove, but at least he has a foundation to build on, which is more than can be said for many of his peers.
